History
Frank Didden established the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom in 1890. It was the
second-oldest polytechnic in the whole of the United Kingdom at the time, having previously been known as Woolwich Polytechnic. Woolwich Polytechnic was founded with an emphasis on education along with social and religious functions, following Quintin Hogg’s principles.
By 1894, more emphasis was placed on offering higher technical education. As a result, part-time day courses were established in collaboration with the Ministry of War (Woolwich Arsenal). Woolwich Polytechnic and a portion of Hammersmith College of Art and Building amalgamated to become Thames Polytechnic in 1970. Following this, several colleges were incorporated: Avery Hill College of Education (1985), Garnett College (1987), Goldsmiths College (1976), and portions of the City of London College
(1988). The government officially recognized Thames Polytechnic as a university for the first time in 1992. The university eventually changed its name to the University of Greenwich.
The University of Greenwich and the Thames College of Health Care Studies formally combined as a full faculty in 1993. In 1996, the university formally merged with the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), which had previously been a research agency of the United Kingdom government. With campuses in Kent and London, the University of Greenwich is now acknowledged as a prominent public university of the modern era.
