History
Coventry College is a progressive, modern institution that prioritizes qualitative research and has a strong track record of providing excellent education. The Coventry School of Design was founded in 1843, which is when Coventry University first got its start. Subsequently, the Coventry School of Art replaced this name. But as part of the Education Act of 1902, it underwent another name change at the beginning of the 20th century, becoming the Municipal Art School. In the 1950s, it underwent one final name change and was renamed the College of Art.
Together with the Rugby College of Engineering Technology in the nearby town of Rugby, the Lanchester College of Technology and the College of Art merged to form Lanchester Polytechnic in 1970. Margaret Thatcher, who was the education secretary at the time, officially recognized the institution as such in February 1971. Because the name Lanchester was frequently confused for both Lancaster and Manchester—most notably when no candidate on the BBC Radio 4 general knowledge program Brain of Britain could correctly identify the region—it afforded the organization a certain amount of anonymity.
After the Birmingham bar bombings in 1974, the polytechnic abandoned its graduation ceremony out of fear that public gatherings might be targeted; the ceremony was finally held in 2009, thirty-five years later. After Lanchester Polytechnic was renamed “Coventry Polytechnic” in 1987, the name Coventry University was adopted that same year when the Further and Higher
Education Act of 1992 controlled the expenses associated with Coventry Polytechnic’s college status.
